Overflow: AQUAvine [page 84]
Review by Erica Scime of The TUB Magazine

If diversity is the theme for Overflow, AQUAvine is the poster child. Upon listening to the modestly titled debut release, Hail AQUAvine, it is obvious that every aspect of Wesley Bowers' music harnesses a variety of influences and years of musical discovery.

Wesley Bowers grew up in Salt Lake City in a family of musicians. Wesley was constantly surrounded by music, his mother singing, his father playing the drums and his siblings playing various instruments. So it came as no surprise that before long Bowers' began to develop an acute ear for musical composition. At a young age, Wesley experimented with a vast array of musical styles to develop his own sound, which, years later, has been named AQUAvine.

AQUAvine debut release, Hail AQUAvine, was an explorative look at Wesley's musical interests, combining traditional instruments with the likes of Cascada and Depeche Mode. He melded such genres as Celtic, progressive rock, jazz, and classic to a firm techno base, creating an electronic experience seemingly beyond our time. Hail AQUAvine pushes the boundaries of music, challenging its listener to disregard any preconceptions they had about typical composition.

Wesley's second album entitled Offerings, was released February 14 of this year. Much like Hail AQUAvine, Offerings is a mesmerizing collection of extraordinary arrangements that fuse together the best components of virtually every genre. On Offerings, Wesley seems to test bits of a new genre: funk. The trumpets of "Medieval Thymes" and the upbeat funkiness of "Happy Time" gives the impression of a subtle '70s influence. Even the guitar on "Sailing on Happiness" is comparable to Earth, Wind & Fire.

Wesley Bowers is a force to be reckoned with: a ground-breaking musician with a wealth of musical knowledge and a mind constantly searching for something new. Be sure to pick up either of AQUAvine's albums to experience an entirely new audio experience.
